Where Montana Spirit Meets Craft Excellence

406 Distillery isn't just another craft spirits brand—it's a celebration of Montana's rebellious, independent spirit, distilled into every bottle.

From the gold-rush saloons of the 1860s to modern small-batch excellence, Montana has always had a complicated, colorful relationship with spirits. 406 honors that heritage while creating world-class craft products that capture the essence of Big Sky Country.

Montana's Spirited History

From Gold Rush to Prohibition to Craft Renaissance

1860s

Gold Rush Saloons

When prospectors flooded Montana Territory seeking fortune, saloons sprang up overnight. These weren't just watering holes—they were community centers, banks, courtrooms, and the heartbeat of frontier towns. Whiskey flowed freely, often homemade and occasionally lethal.

1870s-1890s

Frontier Brewing Boom

Montana's brewing industry exploded. Cities like Butte, Helena, and Virginia City supported dozens of breweries. German immigrants brought Old World techniques, creating distinctive Montana lagers and ales that rivaled anything back East.

1916-1933

Prohibition: Montana's Rebellious Years

Montana went dry in 1916, four years before national Prohibition. But Montanans, fiercely independent, weren't about to let government tell them what to drink. Speakeasies flourished. Moonshine operations hid in remote mountain hollows. Creative distillers produced "fortified wines" and "medicinal tonics" that skirted the law.

The Canadian border became a smuggler's highway, with bootleggers running whiskey from Alberta down to thirsty Montana towns. It was a golden age for outlaws and entrepreneurs—often the same people.

1933-2000s

Post-Prohibition Recovery

After Prohibition ended, Montana's distilling industry never quite recovered to its former glory. Large national brands dominated. Local production dwindled. But the spirit—pun intended—of independent Montana distilling never truly died.

2010s-Present

Craft Distilling Renaissance

Montana's craft distilling scene exploded in the 2010s. Thanks to friendlier state laws and a national appetite for artisanal spirits, small distilleries began popping up across the state. 406 Distillery emerged as a leader, combining traditional techniques with innovative Montana ingredients.

Today, Montana distillers source local grains, mountain spring water, and regional botanicals to create spirits that taste unmistakably of place—terroir in a bottle.

The 406 Distillery Philosophy

In the Old West, wearing a black hat didn't mean you were a villain—it meant you made your own rules, lived by your own code, and answered to no one but yourself.

Small-Batch Excellence

Every bottle is crafted in limited quantities, ensuring quality control and distinctive character. No mass production, no shortcuts.
